Considerations of the LGBTQIA Community in Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment

Co-sponsored by CIPhER, the Office of Experiential Programs, and the Office of Organizational Diversity and Inclusion

Inclusive teaching and learning practices are instrumental in creating and maintaining a learning environment where all participants are fully engaged and respected, and where all participants are open to ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking that are distinct from their own. These practices support meaningful and accessible learning for all learners and help shape the best experiences for learners, preceptors, and patients. This session will consist of discussion and strategies aimed at creating inclusive learning in didactic and experiential settings and will focus specifically on communication and actions related to the LGBTQIA community.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this program, within the context of communication and actions related to the LGBTQIA community, participants will be able to:

1. Define key terms to enhance inclusive learning practices
2. Explain how inclusive educational (or teaching) practices positively impact learning and how the lack of inclusivity or the presence of unconscious bias might negatively impact the learner experience
3. Describe strategies to have sensitive conversations and responses

Agenda:

12:00 pm – 12:15 pm:  Level setting on definitions and strategies around inclusive learning practices

12:15 pm – 12:50 pm:  Small group and large group discussion and application on inclusive learning practices scenarios

12:50 pm – 1:00 pm:    Additional tips and Q&A

Target Audience: This program is designed for all preceptors, faculty, staff, and trainees working in a learning environment.

The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-21-037-L04-P provides 1.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must complete the CE attendance form and the online evaluation of the program (instructions to be emailed). Presenter Information

Bryan Gendron, PharmD, BCPS

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Emergency Medicine, Boston Medical Center & Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine

Bryan Gendron received his PharmD from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2015 and went on to complete a PGY1 and a PGY2 Emergency Medicine residency at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Since completing residency, Bryan has remained at Boston Medical Center as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Emergency Medicine. He is a preceptor for advanced practice pharmacy students from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Northeastern University as well as PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents. Gendron also currently serves as the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Coordinator at BMC. As a clinician at a safety net hospital in an urban setting, he works frequently with underserved populations, including patients who identify as LGBTQ+. Additionally, he is passionate about quality improvement and medication safety.

 

 

 

Irene Ulrich, PharmD, BCACP, CPP

Clinical Pharmacist, MAHEC and Associate Professor of Clinical Education, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Irene Park Ulrich received her PharmD from the University of North Carolina in 2012 and went on to complete a PGY1 residency in ambulatory care pharmacy at Mission Hospital and MAHEC in Asheville, NC. She currently works at MAHEC as a clinical pharmacist providing direct patient care at two MAHEC satellite offices. She is a preceptor for immersion and advanced immersion pharmacy students, as well for both PGY1 and PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy practice residents. Ulrich is also the Director of the PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency at the Mountain Area Health Education Center and the UNC Eshelman School of pharmacy. She is passionate about ambulatory pharmacy practice models and caring for underserved groups, in particular LGBTQ+ populations. She is also an associate professor of clinical education with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and is a primary preceptor for the pharmacy Rural Health Scholars program at the UNC-Asheville satellite campus. Additionally, she is an animal lover and has 2 dogs, 2 donkeys and 4 goats.

 

 

 

Michael D. Wolcott, PharmD, PhD, BCIDPS,

Director of Educational Resources and Scholarships, UNC Adams School of Dentistry and CIPhER Faculty Fellow, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Michael D. Wolcott, PharmD, PhD, BCIDPS is the Director of Educational Resources and Scholarship at the University of North Carolina Adams School of Dentistry. In this role, he supports faculty to optimize teaching and learning, enhance their teaching experience, and inspire educational scholarship. He completed his PhD in education at the UNC School of Education specializing in the learning sciences and psychological studies. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy followed by a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University Hospital, where he worked as a clinical infectious diseases pharmacist. Michael is also a clinical assistant professor and faculty fellow in the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER) at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy where he supports educational research initiatives within the School. Michael’s research focuses on creative problem-solving, curriculum change management, preceptor development, and assessment.
