Preceptor Design Lab Series: Creating a Racially Inclusive Learning Environment in the Experiential Setting

Co-sponsored by CIPhER, the Office of Experiential Programs and UNC Medical Center in conjunction with the Office of Organizational Diversity and Inclusion

Inclusive teaching and learning practices are instrumental in creating and maintaining a learning environment where all participants are fully engaged and respected, and where all participants are open to ideas, perspectives, and ways of thinking that are distinct from their own. These practices support meaningful and accessible learning for all learners and help shape the best experiences for learners, preceptors, and patients. This session is will consist of discussion and strategies aimed at creating inclusive learning in experiential settings and will focus on racially sensitive communication and actions.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Define key terms to enhance racially inclusive learning practices
2. Explain how inclusive experiential practices positively impact learning and how the lack of inclusivity or the presence of unconscious bias might negatively impact the learner experience
3. Describe strategies to have racially sensitive conversations and responses

Agenda:

12:00 pm – 12:15 pm:  Level setting on definitions and strategies around inclusive learning practices

12:15 pm – 12:50 pm:  Small group and large group discussion and application on inclusive learning practices scenarios

Target Audience:  This program is designed for all preceptors, faculty, staff and trainees working in an experiential setting.

Presenter Information:

Antonio Bush, PhD, MS, Director of Research, Diversity Policy and Programs, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

Antonio Bush is an educational researcher with nearly a decade of program development and evaluation expertise. Spanning the fields of higher education, STEM, and health professions education, his scholarship focuses on the exploration of equity, diversity, and inclusion; educational research design through the utilization of qualitative approaches; and the impact of co-curricular experiences on student development. Dr. Bush’s unique blend of practical and scholarly expertise provides him with a timely lens to interrogate equity, diversity, and inclusion in health professions education from an interprofessional and multidisciplinary perspective. In his current role as Director of Research at the Association of American Medical Colleges, he leads the research agenda for the Diversity Policy and Programs Unit. He also continues to collaborate with faculty at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy as an adjunct assistant professor of educational research and innovation.

 

Benyam Muluneh, PharmD, BCOP, CPP, Assistant Professor, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Benyam Muluneh received his Doctor of Pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and completed both PGY1 (Pharmacy Practice) and PGY2 (Hematology/Oncology) residencies at UNC Medical Center.  After residency, he practiced full time as a clinical pharmacist practitioner from 2012-2019.  Muluneh joined DPET in July 2019 as an integral member of the PharmD curriculum by progressing the teaching mission of the school. His scholarship interests include adherence to oral oncolytics and precision dosing in hematology/oncology patients in an effort to improve outcomes.  He also has a passion for international health and serves as a preceptor for one of the Global Pharmacy Scholar (GPS) experiences to Ethiopia. Additionally, he remains involved as a clinical pharmacist practitioner in the UNC Medical Center’s Leukemia Clinic.

 

Kamakshi Rao, PharmD, BCOP, FASHP, Assistant Director for Pharmacy for Academic Enterprises and Research, UNC Medical Center

Kamakshi Rao is an Assistant Director of Pharmacy for Academic Enterprises and Research at the University of North Carolina Medical Center. Dr. Rao completed her PharmD at the Rutgers University College of Pharmacy, followed by a PGY1 at the VCU Health System and an oncology and clinical research fellowship at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Her area of clinical expertise is in adult hematopoietic stem cell transplant, an area she served as a clinical specialist in for nearly 20 years. Through her involvement in the area of stem cell transplant and cellular therapy, she has continually maintained a strong research presence, both in clinical research, but more recently, in the impact of pharmacists on outcomes for patients, providers, and the healthcare system, as well as research around experiential education. In her role as Assistant Director, she oversees UNC’s pharmacy residency programs, one of the largest programs in the country, the research enterprise for the department of pharmacy, and the unique partnership between the medical center and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Charlene Williams, PharmD, BCACP, CDE, Director of Preceptor Development & Clinical Assistant Professor, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

Charlene Williams completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed an ASHP-accredited specialty residency in primary care at Mission Hospital and the Mountain Area Health Education Center. Currently, she is Director of Preceptor Development and a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Williams is a Certified Diabetes Educator and is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. She has prior experience starting hospital-based and primary-care pharmacotherapy clinics, serving as a residency director and preceptor, and working in an ADA-accredited diabetes education center.
