Preceptor Design Lab Series: Practical Solutions for Navigating Challenging Learning Situations

3:00 pm – 4:00 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2021

As mentors and coaches, preceptors are positioned to have a tremendous impact on students’ professional development and learning. In the experiential setting, unique challenges may arise in which preceptors or mentors may need to intervene with practical evidence-based strategies. The purpose of this session is to equip preceptors with resources and skills to approach challenging student situations that promote successful progression of student learning.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify challenging situations that may impact student performance and engagement on immersion experiences
  2. Develop practical solutions to address challenging learning situations
  3. Outline practical solutions for approaching challenging learning situations including utilization of resources available at the school

Target Audience:  This program is designed for all preceptors.

Registration:  For non-UNC affiliates, registration is $15.00.  (UNC Affiliates are considered to be faculty, staff, trainees, students, preceptors and residents who currently work for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill or support its students.)

The University Of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ACPE program 0046-9999-21-192-L04-P provides 1.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit. To receive CE credit, participants must verify attendance, and complete the evaluation form(s) of this program. Participants must provide their name, email address, NABP e-Profile ID, and date of birth (MMDD) to receive credit. Statements of credit can be viewed and printed in CPE Monitor in approximately 2 to 3 weeks. It is the participant’s responsibility to check CPE Monitor to verify credit has been uploaded. If credit is not shown please contact the provider **No partial session credit will be given**


Presenter Information:

Kathryn Fuller, PharmD, BPCS, Experiential Director, Chapel Hill Region & Assistant Professor

Kathryn Fuller received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Miami and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She later completed an Academic Fellowship in Educational Innovation at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy where she helped design several course series and the first-year capstone. Fuller then completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at UNC Health. Currently, she is an assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and practices in the transitions of care clinic at UNC Family Medicine.  Within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Fuller spent two years as the Director of Experiential Education overseeing experiential education before transitioning to the Director of Experiential Education for the UNC region. She currently teaches and facilitates within the pharmacotherapy sequence. Fuller has been recognized with the AACP Excellence in Assessment Award 2017 for her contributions to the UNC first year capstone. She has given numerous presentations on various aspects of precepting and teaching and has published on a variety of topics related to teaching and learning.


Abbey Kruse, MEd, Assistant Director of Experiential Programs

Abbey Kruse received her Bachelor of Science degree in Educational Studies, Adult and Continuing Education Leadership from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Master of Education from Marquette University. Kruse has served in a variety of roles in higher education student development including admissions, advising and program management. She currently serves as the Interim Director of the Office of Curricular and Student Affairs and Assistant Director of the office of Experiential Programs. Kruse leads student development initiatives and activities including student support and interventions in the Office of Curricular and Student Affairs and in the Office of Experiential Programs.



Program Coordinator

Charlene Williams, PharmD, BCACP, CDCES, Director of Preceptor Development, Clinical Assistant Professor, Practice Advancement and Clinical Education

Charlene Williams completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed an ASHP-accredited specialty residency in primary care at Mission Hospital and the Mountain Area Health Education Center. Currently, she is Director of Preceptor Development and a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Dr. Williams is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist and is board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. She has prior experience starting hospital-based and primary-care pharmacotherapy clinics, serving as a residency director and preceptor, and working in ADA-accredited diabetes education centers. Her research interests include preceptor and leadership development.
