We are grateful to our loyal alums that have agreed to serve in this very important role. Mentoring relationships are important in the process of assisting our graduate students toward reaching their potential. Mentors and mentees are matched 1:1 through the Office of Student Affairs. Students interested in the opportunity should contact Will Taylor, Assistant Director of the Graduate Program, at zoso@email.unc.edu.

Program Objectives

The Alumni Mentoring Program suggests that the Mentor and Mentee initially identify specific areas of professional development/scientific interests that they should focus on. Once these are identified, then the below listed suggestions can be worked into those topics to strengthen and improve the mentee’s future. Below are listed several points that could be used as “focus points” for professional development objectives that can be implemented as appropriate between mentee and mentor. The below points are not to be viewed as “hard or expected” objectives to achieve in each relationship, but just starting points to enhance the discussion and growth of the mentor/mentee relationship.

Participant Expectations

For Mentees:

•       Initiate periodic interactions with your mentor (define meeting schedule in initial 1-2 meetings)
